They say, an
Indian can leave India but the Indian in him always stays. Whoever came up with
it had felt what any other homesick Indian feels when they leave their old
pastures behind to start afresh. A feeling of homesickness is a very common
feeling, I felt it too, you feel it too when you are away from your room, your
bed, your comfort, your home but there are always ways to combat it. The first thing
you must do when you reach your foreign destination is to GO OUT! Staying
indoors and going through the memories of your past life will haunt you more.
When you go
out you feel better, especially when you see a few Indians lurking around and
trust me you will ALWAYS find them irrespective of which part of world you are
in so relax! Once you are out, soak in the beauty of your surroundings,
remember why you came and instantly you will feel safe, like at home. In the
process smile at people, go to the nearest coffee shop, if you are shy by
nature and not very comfortable with English then strike a conversation with
the first Indian you meet. I would suggest you interact with the natives more
though as this will help you understand the culture better and you would start
to come out of your comfort zone (which is challenging at first, but don’t
forget you are there to experiment and learn new things).
This is how
you start your journey, let’s say your first day! Come back home and skype with
your loved ones not with teary eyes but with sparkling eyes. Believe me! You
wouldn’t want to fake it because it will come naturally. Lastly, I request you
to not be too hard on yourself or overwhelm yourself with insecurities or
rejections or that famous feeling of loneliness, just take each day as it comes
and I promise it will be fine. If you feel sad, then feel sad but don’t fall
deeper into it and try to come out of it. Just have a blast people! You will
all be fine like I was.
